Our Story
1920s — San Clemente Origins

The Spanish Village by the Sea

In 1925, former Seattle mayor Ole Hanson purchased two thousand acres of coastal ranchland and set out to build his dream: a "Spanish Village by the Sea." Inspired by the whitewashed towns of the Mediterranean, he laid out tree-lined avenues, red-tile roofs, and a grand pier stretching into the Pacific. San Clemente was born — a seaside haven where the rhythm of the waves set the pace of daily life.

A Landmark is Born

Miramar Food Hall was born from a vision to bring new life to one of San Clemente's most treasured landmarks. Once home to the Miramar Theatre and the San Clemente Bowling Center, this 1938 Spanish Colonial Revival gem had been closed for over three decades — its art deco marquee dark, its seats empty, but its place in the town's memory unshaken.

Riding the Wave of Culture

By the 1960s, San Clemente had become the heartbeat of Southern California surf culture. Local hero Joyce Hoffman, a San Clemente High standout, captured back-to-back women's world surfing championships in 1965 and 1966 — putting the town on the global map. Trestles became a pilgrimage site, and the laid-back coastal identity that defines San Clemente today was forged in the salt and spray of that golden era.

Honoring the Past, Building the Future

In 2020, we took on the challenge of restoring the space, honoring its rich history while transforming it into a vibrant culinary destination. Today, Miramar Food Hall stands as a celebration of community, global bites, local vibes and the enduring spirit of Southern California, marking the long-awaited revival of an iconic coastal landmark.
